Spend the day with Platforms Automation

When we asked Nick Peterson to give us a real, under-the-hood understanding of what a day in the life of our Platforms Automation team looked like, his answer was simple: 4 engineers, hundreds of services, thousands of deployments, zero downtime.

Read what Nick had to say below……

1. Can you tell me about the key responsibilities of your team and how it fits into the broader business goals?

A: We design, build and maintain the critical infrastructure—including Kubernetes (Windows/Linux), Prometheus and CI/CD tools—that run most of the Nextgen platform. Our work enables development teams to deliver at scale, supporting the company’s goal of containerizing workloads and transitioning to modern, observable services.

2. What are the most important skills or qualities someone needs to succeed in your team?

A: Technical expertise in Kubernetes, cloud platforms and CI/CD systems and approaches is essential. Beyond that, we value strong problem-solving abilities, effective collaboration, adaptability to new tech and a strong sense of ownership, with a focus on automation to reduce manual effort.

3. What kind of tools, technologies, or processes does your team use regularly and what can someone expect to learn or gain experience in?

A: You’ll work with a modern stack: Kubernetes clusters (Windows/Linux), Rancher, Prometheus, cloud platforms (AWS/Azure) and CI/CD tools (Bamboo/Artifactory/Bitbucket). You will gain hands-on experience managing large-scale, distributed systems and developing custom automation using languages like Python, Go or Bash.

4. Are there clear pathways for career growth or progression within your team?

A: Yes, there are paths from technical roles to junior/senior/lead positions focused on system architecture design or mentoring. The company supports growth through training, certifications and planned projects that offer exposure to areas like security and product development.

5. How would you describe the team culture?

A: We are a small, highly collaborative, innovative and driven group of four engineers. We prioritize open communication, encourage experimentation with new tools and maintain a reasonable work-life balance. Everyone on the team has a direct, meaningful impact on our technology stack.
